It was before five pm on a Tuesday and even though we were guaranteed a rainless afternoon, it had not given up on raining! Ray and me were resting there talking about the football rankings, waiting for the next fuel drain that day to arrive. Eventually we received the phone call from a lovely women on a company trip who had arrived at the Tesco filling station in North Cockerington and filled the wrong fuel in a diesel boss' Land Rover Defender lease car by mistake. She was rather troubled it seemed, crying "I simply cannot believe that I've wrecked the car! I am just so accustomed to putting petrol in my petrol car I had forgot I was operating a diesel!" I advised her to settle back and not to fret, also that things like this regrettably happen. She had managed to get the vehicle into a secure area and, since it was just a few miles off from the office, we could reach the woman quickly. The contaminated fuel was extracted so she could once again go back to the Travelodge she was staying in. Despite the fact that we got extremely soaked, it was all worthwhile to see her drive off satisfied and a lot less stressed. A job in Lincolnshire done well in my books!

The 3 things you SHOULD know about a Misfuel!

Water Contamination or AdBlue Contamination

Water contaminated fuel, no matter whether it's unleaded petrol or diesel, is in many cases a serious matter to address in a vehicle - specifically in present-day common-rail engines.

Water or AdBlue in your fuel tank will likely result in idling difficulties, lumpy running, abnormal smoke and, if it is not dealt with fully, quite possibly broken injectors. Water in petrol is a lot easier to get rid of as compared with water in diesel - mainly because diesel is an oil. Even so we are able to resolve both situations fairly quickly.

Be aware that whenever the vehicle has been run on the water contamination it will very likely require a new fuel filter to be installed as the previous one is going to be completely water-logged and ineffective.

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
